Summary

This position is in the Anesthesia Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. We seek an experienced full-time critical care anesthesiologist to provide care to those in the OR, CCU, ICU, and on the acute pain service. The position will be shared between Anesthesia and the ICU. This position provides specialized anesthesiology services for surgical patients and those undergoing other diagnostic/therapeutic non-operative procedures as well as pain management.

Responsibilities

The Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Healthcare System is seeking a full-time critical care anesthesiologist in the Anesthesiology Service to join an expanding clinical practice. This position will be shared with the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). We provide cutting-edge surgical and procedural care to veterans ranging from common outpatient procedures to complex cardiovascular, thoracic, general surgical, ENT, urologic, orthopedic, plastic and reconstructive, vascular, and gynecologic surgery. The position requires training/experience in the management of acute perioperative pain including the performance of peripheral nerve blocks under ultrasound guidance; competence in the placement of advanced central monitoring catheters using ultrasound guidance; training/experience managing difficult airways utilizing advanced airway management techniques; experience supervising/teaching residents, fellows and medical students; and training/credentials sufficient to support eligibility for an academic appointment with the Virginia Commonwealth University. Physician meets continuing medical education requirements, participates in activities to improve anesthesia-related outcomes and efficiencies including regular participation in morbidity and mortality conferences, staff meetings, and resident mock oral examinations. Experience in the ICU is required. Duties include the provision of clinical anesthesia services in directing/supervising CRNAs or residents in an Anesthesia Care

Work Schedule: Full-time physicians are expected to complete a 40-hour work week and be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call schedule and shifts subject to change.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
1. United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
2. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
3. License: Current, full and unrestricted licenseto practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
4. Residency Training: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
5. English: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
6. Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approximately two hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

Preferred Experience: Experience in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Critical Care

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
