Responsibilities

Hospitalist/Nocturnist

Provide patient care to Veterans in the areas of Internal Medicine and Acute Care Service Line in the form of primary and/or consultative care. Incumbent is responsible for the provision of medical diagnostic evaluation and initial assessment of patients to include a minimum of focused history, physical examinations and pertinent laboratory and other investigations. Will be expected to perform, at a minimum, basic procedures expected of any board eligible Internist-this includes central line, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis and paracentesis. Those without recent procedural experience may require education via simulation and then demonstration of safe and proper procedure.

Incumbent may engage in furthering the education of students, medical residents, and fellows by provision of grand rounds presentations and noon lecture series presentations with an emphasis on development of the skills required to selectively apply medical knowledge based on individual cases and circumstances.Physicians must comply with VHA performance measures. Incumbents are expected to participate in quality improvement processes. Board Certification in Internal Medicine and/or hospital medicine is highly desirable. Previous experience as a hospitalist or nocturnist is desired as is recognition in teaching excellence.

Education Debt Repayment Plan (EDRP): This position is eligible for Education Debt Repayment Plan (EDRP) based upon the availability of funds. Award amounts is determined after review of complete EDRP application and supporting documentation. Final approval by the Under Secretary for Health or designated official verifies EDRP.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
