Summary

About the position: The incumbent serves as a Food Service Worker in the Nutrition Services Department (NSD) of a medical treatment facility (MTF) with responsibility for performing a variety of inpatient nutrition services duties. This includes performing final check of completed trays for accuracy, attractiveness, portion control, food safety, and proper temperature control; providing meal service, delivering and collecting trays throughout the shift.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accuracy of delivered trays by checking menu items on the tray with those ordered on the menu.
  • Verify patient by name and date of birth and delivers tray.
  • Explain room service concepts and procedures for ordering meals and provides each patient with a personal menu.
  • Stock bulk nourishments in the pantry, stocking only up to the par levels.
  • Replenishes cups, straws, condiments, utensils and all other supplies.
  • Prepares sandwiches, complex salads, cold platters, and a variety of beverages.
  • Initiate meal service as soon as a diet order is entered into the computer.
  • Monitors servery/dining room area refrigerators, freezer and salad bar refrigeration units for appropriate temperatures.
  • Receives, stores, and secures all supplies and food items as required.
  • Maintains sanitation in the work area.
  • Breaks down and cleans assigned area when the meal is finished and returns food to the main kitchen.
  • Sets up, garnishes and replenishes salad bar items as required.
  • Weigh, process, and assemble fruits, vegetables, and ingredients for daily recipes.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision. Transporting/delivering meal trays to patients, take bedside orders in a timely and professional manner, ensuring accuracy of trays being delivered to patients by checking menu items with what was ordered on the roster, enter meal orders in to a computer software program, maintaining stock and inventory of on-ward food items, liaison between patient, staff and cooks. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The worker is subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. The worker may be required to work on ladders and perform heavy work such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and moving heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in the kitchen area where steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. The worker is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
