Summary

This position will provide a variety of clerical support to various Sections. If selected, you may be able to work full-time if your class schedule allows. If this is your first appointment in the Federal service, your pay will be set at GS-4, Step 1.

Expected date of graduation must occur after August 2020. Students expecting to graduate before then will not be considered for this position.

Student Pathways Program : This is a Student Internship opportunity that provides students enrolled in a qualifying educational institution with paid opportunities to work in Federal agencies while completing their education.

As a Student Trainee, your typical work assignments may include the following:
  • Use office automation software and equipment to type, edit, and format letters, memoranda, reports, technical documents, charts, graphs, and/or forms.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information between attorney, paralegal, and litigation support staff.
  • Organize meetings for attorneys (including arranging the time and place), arrange conference calls, reserve conference rooms, and ensure that equipment for the conference room is in place and working.
  • Receive incoming telephone calls and visitors.
  • Answer inquiries related to general policy, programs, and activities of the office.
  • Receive, sort, and route incoming mail and correspondence to office staff.
  • Assist in closing cases by purging duplicate documents, ensuring that relevant documents are included with the case file, and preparing an index of the file contents.
  • Send, receive, distribute electronic mail and fax documents; prepare Federal Express mailings; and operate office photocopiers and scanners.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, candidates must meet the program requirements, educational requirements, and typing proficiency listed below.

Program Requirements: Be enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment as a full-time or part-time student into an accredited college or university* in a degree seeking program or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. (See Education Requirements)
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  • If selected, must sign Student Pathways program agreement; furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term.
  • Must be able to complete required occupation related work experience (640 hours) prior to or concurrently with the completion of course requirements for the degree.
  • This position is not eligible for conversion to the competitive service.

Qualification Requirements:
In addition to the program requirements listed above, candidates must meet the minimum education or experience requirements to qualify for the 0399 series at the GS-4 grade level:

GS-4: MUST have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate degree, or l year of general experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be qualifying.

NOTE: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.You must submit an official transcript, unofficial transcript, or a list including courses, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter and semester hours earned.

Typing Proficiency : Applicants must be able to type 40 words per minute. You must self-certify your typing skill on the occupational/assessment questionnaire and your resume.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skill and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
