Responsibilities

  • Plans, integrates, and coordinates comprehensive occupational therapy services for acute area and outpatient. Position requires advanced skill in providing occupational therapy services for clients within wide range of disabilities;
  • Communicates with, consults, and works cooperatively with other VAMC disciplines to provide comprehensive client care;
  • Functions as a member of the Ergonomic Team. Participates in the development of ergonomics and reasonable accommodations guidelines and interventions;
  • Consults with clients and their families through client/family education, training and advising them in the nature of their disability or disease, in home programs, post hospital adjustment and community resources;

  • Makes recommendations for adaptation of architectural barriers and seating (including manual / power wheelchairs and scooters) when indicated;
  • Fabricates adaptive and orthotic devices that are not commercially available and must be developed or modified to meet needs of individual clients;
  • When assessing or providing client care, consider the age of the client as it relates to his/her ability to understand directions, provide objective self assessment or any other medical milieu appropriate to the overall treatment plan;
  • Independently solves problems related to occupational therapy, adapting and modifying treatment plans, activities, and procedures as indicated by patient status;
  • Continuously re-evaluates patient's performance and appropriately modifies treatment as indicated by patient status;
  • When indicated, evaluates patient's home environment through home visits or consultation with other health care professionals, patient and significant others, and assists patient in solving problems associated with that environment;
  • For each patient assigned, regularly documents in patient's medical record. Documentation includes: an initial evaluation, including short and long term goals;
  • Document progress reports, including treatment provided and outcomes in terms of function; and, discharge summaries, including summary of treatment outcomes in terms of goals set, equipment and education provided;
  • Develops new treatment programs, techniques, and/or refinements to current programs to address the needs of patients;
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary meetings to discuss and report on assigned patients and recommends patients in need of occupational therapy services;
  • Responsible for providing a safe, organized clinic area;
  • Orders and maintains supplies in the OT area for ongoing patient treatment;
  • Continually evaluates patient caseload to determine priority and frequency of care needs;
  • Covers for other occupational therapists during absences in order to provide continuity of patient care; Schedules patient visits to insure adequate time required for treatment;
  • Provides basic emergency intervention to the patient when indicated and follows established VA SOPs to prevent/diminish infection and further injury; Carries out other job related activities and special assignments as requested by supervisor

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education - Graduation from a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organizations to include an internship. Foreign graduates of occupational therapy programs meet the requirements subparagraph 2b(1) if they have a current, full, active and unrestricted license/certification/registration/trademark referred to in subparagraph 2d and certification/registration referred to in subparagraph 2c.
  • Certification/Examination - Possession of written documentation that the individual has passed the entry-level certification examination for OT;s which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • State Licensure/Certification/Registration/Trademark - must hold a full, current, and unrestricted state license, certification, registration or trademark to practice occupational therapy in the State, Territory, a Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, completion of one year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade directly related to the position being filled, or three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in occupational therapy or a directly related field.
