Temporary Sports Monitor

In pursuit of service excellence, the Temporary Sports Monitor will monitor and lead youth and adult sports leagues and programs. The Recreation Leader II will also be responsible for monitoring athletic facilities. An incumbent in this class works under the close supervision of a Recreation Manager or Coordinator. The Recreation Leader II should also be available to work various hours which include days, evenings, weekends and some holidays. Enthusiasm, flexibility and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position.

You will ensure that all programs and facilities are safe, fun and positive. You will have the support of and work under the direction of a Recreation Manager. You will execute programming that meets the high standards of excellence.

The Opportunity
  • Makes preparation for recreational activities at one or more sites: opens site, sets up equipment, assures that officials and teams are there, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, controls the crowd, stores equipment, and secures the site;
  • Communicates concerns and makes recommendations to higher level staff regarding facilities, participants, volunteers, and programs;
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service trainings, sessions, and workshops;
  • Ensures all safety precautions and facility rules and regulations are followed;
  • Assists patrons with program and facility information;
  • Plans and develops sport and recreation programs in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the community;
  • Serves as lead instructor for beginner to intermediate level sports classes;
  • Maintains a safe program environment and facility;
  • Administer first aid as required;
  • Performs related work as required.

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; experience leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

A background working with at-risk population, experience working independently and as part of a team, experience working with individual and family services community and street outreach, schools, therapeutic recreation, sports programs and other support services programs. Strong communication skills.


This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
