Sanitary Sewer Civil Engineer III

An Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking a Civil Engineer III in the Sanitary Infrastructure Division to perform civil engineering work and manage projects related to the City's sanitary and combined sewer systems. The primary focus of this position will be two-fold: (1) to manage capital projects within the Division and (2) to serve as City staff coordinator to Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) as part of the implementation of the RiverRenew project for the combined sewer outfalls located in the City.

The successful candidate will have experience managing projects related to sanitary sewer systems and significant experience working with a variety of stakeholders to ensure the success of projects managed.

The Opportunity
  • Evaluate alternatives and prepare concept-level designs for sanitary sewer infrastructure projects;
  • Oversee consulting engineers' task orders and contracts related to City projects, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget;
  • Prepare technical and non-technical correspondence, memoranda, and reports to a variety of stakeholders and prepare and present technical information to stakeholders;
  • Ensure that projects adhere to State and Federal regulations;
  • Serve as the City staff liaison during the implementation of the RiverRenew project. Coordinate with other City T&ES divisions and other departments related to permit requirements, construction monitoring and inspections, and other aspects of the project. Prepare and provide routine briefings to the City Manager's Office;
  • Represent the Department in meetings with other City departments and in meetings with citizens and citizen's associations relative to City projects;
  • Conduct surveys of other jurisdictions regarding their experience with various policies, products, construction materials and techniques;
  • Utilize GIS mapping for analysis and presentation purposes;
  • Perform related work as required


The Ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must have graduated from an engineering school of recognized standing with a degree in civil engineering; and five (5) years of professional experience.

To be considered as an Ideal candidate one should also have three (3) years of experience in the practice of professional civil engineering, some of which has been performed at the Civil Engineer II level; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to sewer systems.

The selected candidate will have either a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and at least three (3) years of experience related to sanitary sewer collection systems.
