About the Position: This Supervisory Firefighter, GS-0081-08 position with the Directorate of Emergency Services is located at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and directs, on a 24-hour rotating basis, the daily operations of one of the fire stations engaged in providing fire prevention and protection services.
  • Responsible for establishing an initial incident command location and directing all communications from the incident scene.
  • Directs two or more teams of personnel, from within the worksite, in rescue work performed on the installation.
  • Serves as the initial incident commander in hazardous materials incidents when first arriving officer.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets immediate priorities, prepares schedules for completion of work, and evaluates performance of subordinates to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Provides on the job training and instruction for new employees (i.e., proficiency training, classroom instruction, fire prevention training demonstrations, fire evacuation drills, and other base population training).
  • Conducts fire prevention inspections of Army facilities to identify hazardous conditions and prepares reports of these inspections.
  • Issues hot-work permits and performs follow-up inspections of work areas prior to closing the permits.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the employee to have and be able to maintain both, a valid state Driver's License in order to obtain a Government Driver's license.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Employee is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and MUST pass a urinalysis test prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position
  • This position requires a physical agility test.
  • This position requires you to work 48-hour rotating shifts, 72 hours a week, and 144 hours per pay period. You may be required to work overtime as the need arises.
  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
  • This position requires that you are able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background security clearance

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work which involves making appropriate decisions relative to firefighting and rescue operations; coordinating and scheduling fire protection services, evaluate progress of training programs; hazardous material containment and control and fire prevention inspections; directing crews in firefighting activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Selective Placement Factor: Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Hazardous Materials Technician, Apparatus Driver/Operator for Pumper, ARFF, Mobile Water Supply, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Service Instructor I, and Fire Inspector I, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, and National Registry or State Emergency Medical Technician Certificate.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

(b) If you have passed the designated entry age limit noted, but have previously served in a covered position you may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that you: 1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable federal firefighter service by the time the federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and credit towards retirement may be subtracted from your age to determine if the federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age.
