Responsibilities

As an IRB Scientific Analyst, your duties will include, but not be limited to:
  • Independently provide expertise and scientific, analytical, and program support to NIH Intramural IRB.
  • Review Intramural Research Program (IRP) protocol actions (new requests, responses to stipulations, amendments, continuing reviews, closures, etc.) from a scientific, administrative and technical viewpoint prior to submission to the IRB for compliance with regulatory, policy, and procedural requirements and for completeness, appropriateness, and adequacy of information (e.g., ensuring sufficient detail for review, ensuring required elements have been addressed).
  • Coordinating IRB meetings and agendas including scheduling presentations by consultants and principal investigators and monitoring maintenance or quorum.
  • Developing guidance materials, manuals, templates, job aids and other written and electronic resources on IRB processes and functions.
  • Serving as an expert advisor to the Board Team Lead to evaluate current procedures and recommend and implement changes to improve operations.

Qualifications

You qualify if you meet the following qualification requirements:

Basic Position Requirements:
Possess a a Bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position? (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).
AND
Additional Requirements for Applicants to the GS-12 level:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: reviewing human subject research protocols for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations and institutional policies; including ongoing monitoring human subject research protocols; and, coordinating with Principal Investigators to facilitate their IRB requests.

Additional Requirements for Applicants to the GS-13 level:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: reviewing and evaluating human subject research protocols for compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies; performing scientific program planning and analysis activities; evaluating the impact of new human subject research program policies on existing research protocols; and developing measures of effectiveness in setting human research protections program goals and objectives.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
