The National Museum of African American History and Culture's primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct research in the field of African American history, to publish findings for all audiences; and interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Responsibilities

The incumbent in this position serves as a Sports Program Specialist in the Office of Curatorial Affairs. The incumbent will work closely with the Museum Curator of Sports to develop, implement, and evaluate sports-related programs and initiatives in partnership with internal and external partners. Furthermore, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with overall administrative support of the assigned programs. Duties include:
  • developing and maintaining public/private partnerships with sports leagues (e.g., the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the NCAA etc.), the United States Olympic Committee, and other education organizations major that reach a local, national, and global audiences;
  • updating support requirements (e.g. personnel, equipment and facilities) for the operation of the program;
  • assisting with the logistical arrangements for programs, meetings, conferences, trips and other activities related to the program, including meeting rooms, audiovisual equipment and notification of participants, if necessary;
  • attending meetings and disseminating follow-up minutes and summaries;
  • coordinating with the program manager/director to monitor monetary obligations, commitments and expenditures for the program; and
  • reviewing current and past budgets, preparing and justifying budget requests and allocating funds according to spending priorities and justifying budget requests.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as developing and managing educational and/or public programs; drafting written responses and/or materials; providing day-to-day operation for an office; monitoring/tracking expenditures; establishing/update manual and electronic files; maintaining appointments/events calendars electronically; creating documents using Windows software, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.

OR Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

OR a Combination: Education and experience, in part, totaling 100% may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education: If you are qualifying by education and/or you have education completed in a foreign college/university described above, it is your responsibility to provide transcripts and proof of U.S. accreditation for foreign study.

  • Ability to perform administrative functions such as preparing reports and memoranda, tracking supplies and inventories, and monitoring day-to-day operations of a program.
  • Ability to use automated accounting systems to track and monitor financial expenses and records.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of a program and recommend changes and procedures.
  • Ability to interact with customers and address/resolve complaints with tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in written communication to prepare and edit a variety of documents.
