The Kennedy Center, which opened on September 8, 1971, is located on 17 acres overlooking the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The Center continues its efforts to fulfill President Kennedy's vision by producing and presenting an unmatched variety of theater and musicals, dance and ballet, orchestral, chamber, jazz, popular, world, and folk music, and multimedia performances for all ages.

Job Description:

Operating within the Development department, the Major Gifts team stewards and cultivates some of the Kennedy Center's most generous and dedicated supporters. Reporting to the Manager of Major Gifts, the Assistant Manager of Leadership Campaigns manages all aspects of the Kennedy Center's senior leadership portfolios. The successful candidate for this position is a team-oriented multi-tasker, who is comfortable staying organized under both short- and long-term deadlines, understands the front- and back-end of fundraising, and loves building and maintaining relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

40% Manage and implement key aspects of a portfolio for Senior Leadership; including, but not limited to, assisting with raising $25M+ of designated and undesignated support (including a $2.3M+ Major Gifts annual general operating goal) as well as:
  • Serving as the Major Gifts team liaison and at times the Development Department liaison with the Office of the President for meeting coordination and preparation, as well as domestic and international trips as they pertain to donors/prospects in the portfolio
  • Developing plans for and implementing, in conjunction with the Manager, for the President's Council, a special constituency of the President and Chairman
  • Drafting and editing all types of written materials (solicitations, acknowledgments, notes, research briefings, proposals, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity;
  • Indirectly or directly building ongoing relationships with current and prospective donors in conjunction with the Manager and Senior Leadership that ultimately lead to the solicitation gifts verbally, in writing, and in person
  • Identifying opportunities for gift increases and, in coordination with the Manager, creating detailed and personalized solicitation strategies;
  • Accurately tracking progress, ensuring completion of action items from initial discovery through acquisition, and reporting Fund progress to Manager, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and President;
  • Indirectly or directly stewarding donors via phone, email, in-person, and written communication and fulfilling donor benefits;
  • Managing ticket requests, table purchases, and pertinent event details for the Kennedy Center Honors, as well as four major galas annually for donors in the portfolio
  • Planning and executing donor benefit, cultivation, prospecting, and auxiliary events

40% Coordinate and implement key aspects of the Annual Trustees Fund (including but not limited to $2.3M+ general operating support goal) in tandem with the Major Gifts team and Senior Leadership, including:
  • Actively stewarding key Board of Trustees members through indirect or direct contact via phone, email, in-person, and written communication and fulfilling donor benefits;
  • Editing all types of written materials (solicitations, acknowledgments, notes, research briefings, proposals, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity;
  • Identifying opportunities for gift increases and, in coordination with the Manager, creating detailed and personalized solicitation strategies;
  • Accurately tracking progress, ensuring completion of action items from initial discovery through acquisition, and reporting Fund progress to Manager, Vice President, and Senior Vice President;
  • Assisting in the development of materials and strategy for the Board of Trustees Development Committee meetings throughout the year;
  • Assisting in the facilitation of Board communications between the department of Development and Institutional Affairs;
  • Planning and executing donor benefit, cultivation, prospecting, and auxiliary events

20% Assist in strategy of and solicitation for Leadership Campaigns (like the Capital Campaign for the REACH with a $250M goal) and other upcoming special campaigns and events as it pertains to the Senior Leadership portfolio, including:
  • Drafting all types of correspondence (solicitations, acknowledgments, tax receipts, etc.) of varying length and complexity for Major Gifts donors, Trustees, and annual Major Gifts prospects;
  • Preparing donor and strategy research projects in support of Campaign goals as it relates to the Major Gifts and Trustees portfolios.
  • Assist in the solicitation and stewardship strategy for designated and undesignated support of Major Gifts donors and members of the Board of Trustees totally more than $25M per year.

N/A Responds to the needs and requests of Kennedy Center management and staff in a professional and expedient manner, adheres to all employer policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications:
  • You have a Bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in a related field.
  • You have a minimum of three years of development or related experience, preferably at a large organization or arts institution.
  • Working knowledge of the performing arts and experience with Tessitura is preferred.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is minimal, however attendance at major fundraising events and performances is required. In those conditions, the noise level is very loud.

Travel up to 5% may be required, predominately local.
