Summary

The Sciences and Exploration Directorate, Earth Sciences Division, Biospheric Sciences Laboratory (Code
618), is looking for a highly skilled individual to conduct research to interpret remotely sensed indicators of
plant physiological state, and understand how environmental conditions affect ecosystem function.

Responsibilities

  • As Research Physical Scientist, specializing in Earth Sciences Remote Sensing, you will collect and analyze field, airborne, and satellite remote sensing data to assess the role of environmental conditions on vegetation condition and function.
  • Integrates remote sensing observations, laboratory studies, and theoretical models to understand vegetation physiology and identify new opportunities for the use of remote sensing for ecosystem studies.
  • Uses tools (including models of plant metabolism and radiative transfer) to better understand
    spectral properties of vegetation, and how these spectral properties relate to vegetation physiology, function, and composition.
  • Integrates various study and analysis results into comprehensive technical briefings, reports, and technical papers. Is recognized within and beyond NASA as an expert in the field of ecosystem science.
  • Provides technical advice and counsel to management and others, both within and outside the organization, in areas such as measurement and instrumentation, ecosystem science, and earth science.
  • Publishes study results in the peer reviewed literature. You will plan and coordinate scientific projects in unexplored areas where new techniques and approaches are needed.
  • Develop, review, and provide recommendations for proposed project requirements, expected results, and budgetary estimates.
  • Analyze and consolidate project approaches and resource requirements for interdisciplinary projects or programs in areas such as measurement and instrumentation.
  • Provides expert guidance to management for strategic planning and program development in areas such as ecosystem science and earth science.
  • Maintains knowledge of current developments in optical remote sensing, hyperspectral instrumentation and data analysis, and vegetation physiology.
  • Ensures application of the latest state-of-the-art technology to NASA missions and programs by relying on previous experience and keeping abreast of current developments in related technology fields in areas such as life science and earth science.

Qualifications

You must meet Basic Education Requirement and you must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience for GS-15 is define as planning, developing, conducting, or coordinating research studies and evaluating complex and innovative scientific projects related to terrestrial carbon cycle and ecosystems; lead highly complex and difficult data analysis, including supervising development of specialized instruments including imaging spectrometers, and related instrumentation systems, equipment, computer programs, and statistical analysis technique; publishing results in the peer-reviewed literature.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
