Board Certified/Eligible General Surgeon (Oncology) - The Hunter Holmes McGuire Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking an experienced surgical oncologist to join the Surgical service line.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have experience in academic medical settings with an interest in clinical research. Specialized experience with hepatobiliary malignancies, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis is required. The candidate must possess experience supervising and educating surgical residents. Duties include:
· Direct patient care on inpatient acute wards, outpatient clinics, and in the operating suite
· Supervision of housestaff and students
· Opportunities for clinical research (no more than 10% protected time)

Candidates must be eligible for academic appointment at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine. Board certification or eligibility in Surgery is required for academic appointment at VCU. Rotating shifts are available and recruitment incentives have been authorized.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
