The Manager, Local School Partnerships manages the planning and implementation of local school partnerships (DC Partnership Schools and Changing Education Through the Arts) with a focus on developing and maintaining long term relationships with schools in the DC, Maryland and Virginia communities. The goal of this portfolio of schools is to demonstrate a deep investment in the local school communities while providing arts-based support that aligns with the mission of each school. Supports the oversight of budgets and allocation of resources for these programs. Acts as the first point of contact for partnership schools.

Creates strong relationships with school and district personnel in order to develop, implement and monitor arts-based programming that aligns with the mission and goals of each partner. In cooperation with the Manager, Teaching Artist Strategy, identifies and recruits teaching artists locally to ensure a diverse representation of art forms and perspectives.

Demonstrated ability to effectively recruit, set expectations and goals, plan, organize, control, delegate, and evaluate work of subordinate employees and contractors. Successfully builds trusting relationships with employees utilizing effective coaching techniques to ensure maximum productivity, completion of goals and maintenance of quality and alignment with departmental and institutional goals.

Demonstrates ability to shift priorities in order to achieve all high value work. Works to build productive relationships throughout the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

35% Monitor expenditures and assist with budgeting for local school partnerships; manage all contracts and payments associated with local school partnership; complete all required reporting, including reporting for grantors, funders and the Development department;

25% Build and maintain relationships with school leadership, school liaisons and district arts personnel; meet regularly with school personnel to develop and monitor customized plans for arts-based supports;

15% Manage technical and logistical requirements for program events (meetings, workshops, residencies);

15% Liaise with and support teaching artists serving as residency artists in local partnership schools representing a diversity of art forms and perspectives; regularly observe residency sessions to provide feedback and monitor for program quality; in cooperation with the Manager, Teaching Artist Strategy, recruit artists to serve as residency artists;

5% Under leadership of the Manager, Teaching Artist Strategy, serve on the Teaching Artist Strategy Pod and Working Group;

5% Represents the Kennedy Center and Education Department at local and school events.

  • Must possess a graduate degree or equivalent experience in arts education, education or performing arts.
  • A broad knowledge of the performing arts, education, and school districts is required.
  • A minimum of five years' experience teaching students in the arts and three years' experience teaching adults is preferred. Three years' experience designing educational programs for teachers is preferred.
  • Three years' experience hiring, observing, providing feedback and evaluating teaching artists and/or teachers in the arts is preferred.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required:
  • Should have experience working in a school setting, as well as administrative work.
  • Must have a working knowledge of arts education, the performing arts, and be computer literate, with a typing speed of at least 50 words per minute
  • Must have experience managing a budget, with additional experience in financial record keeping.
  • Must have proficient writing and editing skills to compose and edit written reports, educational materials, and public correspondence, as well as good communication skills in public speaking and presentation, and in dealing directly by telephone or in person.
