As an Exterior Electrician you will maintain and repair medium voltage (600v-34.5\\69kv) electrical equipment for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport.

Exterior Electrician

This is a journey (full performance) level job in the Exterior Electrician series.

Serves in the Electrical Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at either Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport.

Installs, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs/replaces, and modifies electrical equipment and electrical distribution systems, underground/overhead power lines, airfield lighting systems, navigational aids, street and parking lot lighting systems, AC/DC and programmable control systems, and standby generator systems. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Works on distribution and power systems including medium voltage (600v-34.5\\69kv), automatic transfer switches, kWh meters and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, interior and site lighting systems, portable and stationary generators, motors, motor control centers, traffic signals, and variable speed drives.

Troubleshoots, repairs/replaces, and performs preventive maintenance on various airfield lighting systems. Locates and repairs/replaces faulty transformers, cables, and fixtures, as needed; rebuilds airfield. May operate, maintain, and repair the human-machine interface (HMI) hardware and software components for the Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) and for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

Performs other electrical work such as installing new electric service, temporary substations and wiring; airfield regulators, vehicle gates, standby generator systems, and other electrical systems and repairing/replacing switchgears, transformers, regulators, and digital, electromechanical, electronic and pneumatic relays, electrical motors, kWh meters.

Responds to trouble calls. Determines if issue should be fixed immediately (such as restoring essential equipment/systems) or if work order should be submitted. Installs Transient Voltage Surge Suppression Systems (TVSS) for protection against spikes and swells in the distribution equipment. Maintains, tests, and repairs lightning protection systems in accordance with NFPA 780.

Programs, sets timing of, and installs systems for traffic signal controls including detection system, conflict monitors, and twelve ring NEMA controllers.

May record readings on electric revenue meters for tenant billing purposes (IAD only).

Performs electrical work following the National Electric Code (NEC) and Airports Authority Design Manual. Ensures electrical work is performed to code and passes inspections.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems. OR A Journey License as an Electrician.

One year of specialized experience in the installation, test, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of medium voltage (600v-34.5\\69kv) electrical equipment and systems such as generators, transformers, switches, and circuit breakers.

Journey level knowledge of, and skill in, medium voltage (600v-34.5\\69kv) electrical equipment/systems installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair/ replacement. This includes knowledge of the theories, principles, and standards of electrical work.

Skill in using tools, schematics, blueprints, and other equipment in electrical work.

Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer, computerized work order and time and attendance systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Journeyman Electrical License (or higher).

Experience operating, maintaining, and repairing airfield lighting systems, switchgear, traffic signals, and/or overhead lighting.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of hire or placement into the position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).

May operate aerial lift truck, scissor lift, and forklift to work on overhead electrical systems.

Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (including exerting 20 to 40 pounds of force or lifting objects up to 80 pounds).

May be required to bend, stoop, crouch, or work in cramped positon, or at heights of 95 feet.

Is subject to possible electrical shocks, exposure to potentially hazardous materials, and noisy airfield. Wears personal protective equipment in accordance with NFPA 70E Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for safe work on and near energized circuits.

Is subject to hold over or recall on a 24 hour basis for essential services and emergencies.

Required to work various shifts as needed. May be required to work nights or weekends.

Work is typically reviewed in progress upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
