Job Announcement

Plans, schedules and assigns maintenance operations to field crews and individuals on a daily basis. Typical duties are as follows:
  • Works in the field along with the work crew.
  • Assists in planning, scheduling and implementing work assignments under agency programs on a day-to-day basis.
  • Inspects work sites to determine scope of work to comply with adopted program service levels.
  • Recommends priorities for maintenance and repair operations. Coordinates equipment use and material requests for work assignments.
  • Reviews completed and on-going assignments to ensure the quality of work performed. Generates relevant computer reports.
  • Investigates citizen complaints.
  • Determines utility, facility and property ownerships through research of land records, development plans, and geographic information systems.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence as assigned.
  • Participates in the annual performance evaluations for five to eight subordinates.
NOTE: Incumbent(s) are required to report to alternative work locations based on the type of project. The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education, and three years of increasingly responsible experience related to sewer line construction/maintenance or related experience.

Increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and construction of storm drainage, stormwater management and roadways to include at least three years as a crew leader or lead worker.

Possession of a valid commercial driver's license class B with tanker endorsement is required for this position; and, appointee is required to comply with Fairfax County Drug/Alcohol Random Testing Program.

Is required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment physical as a condition of employment and to the satisfaction of the employer.

The following duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Pushing, pulling, bending, lifting, stooping, walking climbing in and out of manholes. Be able to lift/slide 90 pounds with assistance.
  • Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness.
  • Incumbent must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders. Entry includes use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation.
  • Protective equipment specific to confined space work includes hardhat, eye protection, safety toe boots, personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment.

Panel interview may include an exercise.
