Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) is a comprehensive organization working to improve and enhance the lives of the county's 1.2 million residents. DPWES designs builds, and maintains capital projects while protecting our natural resources.

Provides project management for a wide variety of capital improvement projects (such as fire and rescue stations, libraries, police stations, including the design and construction of new facilities), and renovations and feasibility studies. Manages assigned building projects from concept through project close-out. Manages and negotiates professional architectural and engineering design contracts, reviews design plans and specifications, and assures projects are executed within established budgets and schedules. Assists with land acquisition of properties for public use. Coordinates using agency requirements into the design of county building projects.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five years of project management experience in the design and construction of building projects.
  • Experience in areas such as planning, design, budget, schedule, quality control, and construction administration.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience with presentations to various audiences.
  • Information technology skills including use of Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Proven experience in collaboration and teambuilding with various groups.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Is required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Ability to hear normally in order to recognize backup alarms of the construction equipment. Ability to safely climb construction ladders up to 15 feet. Must be able to produce hand written and typed documents.

Panel interview may include an exercise.
