University Sustainability Director

The George Mason University Facilities Department invites applications for a University Sustainability Director. Responsibilities : This position is responsible for developing and leading a coherent, university-wide climate and sustainability program by coordinating operations, teaching, research and student sustainability activities to achieve the overall strategic goals of the university.

Assesses cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and means of achieving acceptance. Works with appropriate university units and departments to implement initiatives. Primary responsibility for ownership of the University's climate neutrality goals.

This position will manage a team of Sustainability Project Managers as well as a large group of student volunteers.

Required Qualifications: * Strong interpersonal skills. Able to craft consensus from widely disparate groups. * Knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues. Capable of maintaining currency in rapidly changing field. * Commitment to institutional and societal sustainability. * Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in diverse institution. * Ability to work within a complex higher education system. Understands higher education operations, teaching, and research concerns and issues. * Successful and demonstrated vision and achievement of results in sustainability-related program development. * Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Able to communicate at all levels of an organization, effectively tailoring message for the appropriate audience. Skillful in conveying difficult messages to senior executives. * Analytical and planning skills necessary. Understanding of building and energy systems a plus. * Capable of thriving in a service organization with constantly changing priorities. * Familiarity with fundraising and grant writing processes. * Strong networking skills within institution and community at large. * Strong personnel management skills. * Master's degree in environmental, engineering, business, or relevant field required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Ten or more years of demonstrable experience working with sustainability programs. Management of such programs in a research institution of higher education a plus. * Experience in strategic planning, project management, team management, partnership building, and marketing. * Experience planning and implementing sustainability related behavioral change projects or programs in higher education that achieve meaningful results. * Experience with building consensus in higher education. * Effective communications with various levels of the higher education community from senior executives to faculty to students to community partners. * Experience managing staff and programs.
