Summary

This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR), Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The incumbent serves under the general supervision of the Craft Shop Supervisor and performs a variety of duties in the zone. The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

  • Assists the supervisor in planning, directing, and monitoring the operations of a zone Crafts Shop involving a staff ranging from 5 to 20 subordinates.
  • Serves as working leader, performing skilled trade or maintenance work as needed.
  • Provides input and assistance to the supervisor on developing performance plans and standards, evaluating performance and coaching staff on performance.
  • Assists the supervisor in planning the work of subordinates on a short and long term basis.
  • Assists the supervisor in identifying workers required, explaining work requirements, methods and procedures, establishing standards of quality and quantity to be met, and providing instructions to co-workers.

Physical Requirements: Physical exertion is considerable and includes prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in cramped and awkward position, reaching, lifting, and bending when using hand and power tools. Weight lifted may exceed 50 pounds. Assistance is usually available for handling heavier materials and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

1. Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic Leader without more than normal supervision.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated: Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operations, repair, etc.

2. Ability to lead a full range of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair services associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical operations.

3. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operations, repair, and maintenance (painting, carpentry, plumbing, or electrical).

4. Knowledge of technical practices associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical operations.

5. Ability to use measuring instruments associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing or electrical work.

6. Knowledge of interpreting instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).

7. Skills in using and maintaining tools and equipment used to perform minor repairs and maintenance.

8. Knowledge of materials used performing the following maintenance tasks, painting, plumbing, electrical or carpentry work.
