WMATA is seeking a server virtualization engineer to join our server operations team. The server operations team is responsible for a computing environment of over 2000 virtual servers and 1000 virtual desktops that provides critical services to internal and external customers of WMATA. This candidate will oversee lifecycle aspects of multiple service environments, acting as an owner of some systems and consulting on others. The candidate will understand and manage the integration and coexistence of the various products and infrastructure systems in place.

The successful candidate will have multiple years of hands-on professional experience planning and implementing solutions using VMWare ESX and Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp. The candidate should have demonstrable experience utilizing and implementing VDI, PvS, vSphere, Veeam, DRS, NSX and other core virtualization technologies. The candidate will also have expertise in managing Windows (Server2012, 2016) and Linux (RHEL) systems as well as integrating them with Enterprise storage solutions. In addition, the candidate will have expertise in provisioning and supporting Windows desktop operating systems in a virtual environment (PtoV, VtoV, reverse imaging). This position will also serve as the escalation point for all incidents, changes, and problems associated with WMATA's virtualization platforms.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a related field, with a minimum of six (6) years of hands-on experience with implementation and support of 300 or more virtual servers in a SAN-based multi-cluster environment and 6 years of experience with Microsoft Server Operating Systems. Experience in some financial systems support.

Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered if candidate can effectively demonstrate progressively responsible experience in implementation and support of 300 or more virtual servers in a SAN-based multi-cluster environment and 6 years of experience with Microsoft Server Operating Systems. Experience in some financial systems support.

License:

Certifications in network operating system(s), VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and messaging systems preferred.

Job Summary/Duties:

This position will provide the technical leadership for the Infrastructure Upgrade Project under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Server and Storage Operations for the Data Center and Infrastructure group. The incumbent is responsible for the development, implementation, testing, and maintenance of the virtual servers environment. The incumbent will also participate in developing procedures, specifications, documentation, and future technology upgrades for the virtual server infrastructure technology. This is professional and technical nature of work for the Department of Information Technology's Office of Data Center and Infrastructure.

Administers and supports virtual servers infrastructure in a multi-site heterogeneous environment.

Administers and supports physical servers.

Develops and implements backup strategies for the servers environment.

Develops, implements, tests, and maintains high availability and disaster recovery strategies for the virtual servers environment.

Assists with developing procedures, documentation and templates for managing virtual server infrastructure technology.

Assists with developing future technology upgrades to server virtualization technology.

Supports Active Directory and Exchange technical maintenance.

Writes specifications that will meet the business needs and legal requirements, and comply with applicable standards.

Builds and manages implementation plans for projects.

Responds to questions and analyzes what-if scenarios.

Reviews technical and design documentation; writes technical and design documents.

Develops and maintains change management procedures and standards.

Defines and implements infrastructure security (hardware, software, OS level, etc.).

Assists with computer equipment racking and relocation.

Mentors team members.

Collaborates with IT infrastructure specialists to leverage infrastructure capabilities and expertise in optimizing designs and applications.

Provides after hours on-call support.

Creates test and quality assurance plans.
