Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • High School diploma, or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED), supplemented by advanced formal training in the electrical, air-conditioning, mechanical, hydraulic, or related fields

Experience
  • Five (5) years' experience in transit car maintenance work

Certification/Licensure
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the jurisdiction of residence

Preferred
  • Some experience at the supervisory level

Job Summary:

The Shift Supervisor, Car Maintenance, is responsible for the shift operation of a shop maintenance function, including electrical, structural, mechanical, air-conditioning, machine shop or electronic shop, or may perform various combinations of these duties on the assigned shift.

Essential Functions:
  • Supervises the maintenance, inspection, testing and modification of the Authority's railcars and related equipment, on a shift basis. Makes assignments, according to priority, and monitors progress and satisfactory completion of tasks.
  • Analyzes failures in systems and equipment as necessary, to identify causes and recommends corrective measures. Ensures new employees are properly trained, and that all employees follow required safety guidelines.
  • Interprets maintenance manuals, schematics, and job orders, as required. Requisitions materials, parts and tools, and ensures they are used properly.
  • Recommends and initiates personnel actions, i.e., promotions, transfers, terminations, and related actions. Discusses complaints with employees and attempts to resolve them, in accordance with established Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Reviews reports prepared by staff for completeness and accuracy. Prepares periodic and other reports, as necessary. Recommends measures to improve personnel and equipment performance, as appropriate.
  • Based on area of assignment, on a shift basis, may be responsible for supervising any one or various combinations of the following areas:
  • Electrical (Overhaul, repair, testing and installation of Railcar systems, sub-systems and components).
  • Structural (Body) (Refurbish the interior of transit cars, performing structural repairs, including the application of protective and decorative finishes to car bodies).
  • Mechanical (Recondition all mechanical components of the Railcar).
  • Air-Conditioning (Replace, repair, and test air-conditioning systems and equipment).
  • Machine Shop (Repair, rebuild and/or fabricate new electrical/mechanical components from basic material).
  • Electronic Shop (Overhaul, repair, and replace Railcar electronic systems and components).
