Responsibilities

As a Nuclear Engineer, you will:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the research, development, design, acquisition, specification, construction, inspection, installation, certification, testing, overhaul, refueling, operating practices and procedures, maintenance, supply support, and ultimate disposition of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
  • Provide emergent technical support to resolve issues that could impact the operational or shipyard repair schedule of Navy nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
  • Provide oversight and coordinating with diverse entities such as organizations within the Navy, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, reactor plant design laboratories, and shipyards.
  • Provide technical direction, review, analysis, and program management of resource requirements and long-range planning for reactor servicing work within the Reactor Refueling Division.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on reactor servicing resource requirements and long-range planning.
  • Manage and oversee the equipment, procedures, resources and operations required for reactor refueling operations in nuclear prototype plants.
  • Administer and manage an average $300 million technical work plan to support Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program servicing objectives, develop, and prepare short and long-range plans to ensure funding strategies meet Program needs, are cost effective and in compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines.Supervise the Reactor Refueling Division's engineering and administrative staff.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent at the GS-13 level (or equivalent) grade level in the Federal service. Experience should include: Professional knowledge, skills and abilities to apply the fundamental principles of nuclear engineering including reactor materials, metallurgy, nuclear physics, heat transfer, mechanical design, hydraulics, and naval architecture.

Your application and resume should demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). You are NOT required to provide a separate narrative response. Rather, your resume must describe how your past experience demonstrates the following KSAs.
  • Mastery of advanced principles of naval nuclear propulsion engineering.
  • Knowledge of design and development of various nuclear reactor cores, components, and systems.
  • Working knowledge of related fields such as safety and industrial engineering, radiation shielding, stress analysis, and ship construction.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, administrative and fiscal policies, and procedures and practices.
  • Ability to effectively interact with senior government and contractor officials.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the efforts of other engineering and management personnel.
  • Ability to plan, evaluate, and execute major short and long-range work efforts.

    Education

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEER:
    • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering OR
    • Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate professional field, provided you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. OR
    • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. OR
    • Current registration as a Professional Engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico allows eligibility only if your registration is within or closely related to nuclear engineering.
    EDUCATION: You must provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the US Department of Education.

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
