Summary

This position is located in the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation's Actuarial Services & Technology Department (ASTD). ASTD is located within the Office of Benefits Administration and is responsible for the calculation and valuation of benefits for participants in PBGC's single employer program, as well as the determination of single and multiemployer liabilities for purposes of PBGC's financial statements.

Responsibilities

  • Review actuarial valuations, ensuring that work is accomplished in accordance with professional actuarial standards, applicable laws and regulations, and policies.
  • Advise, train, and assist other actuaries in all aspects of actuarial case work.
  • Serve as an authoritative source for actuarial training content development and authoritatively communicate this technical content to others.
  • Exercise responsibility for the review, evaluation and/or modification of case review standards, processes, and procedures, and work to ensure that procedures have been followed and results are accurate.

Qualifications

All qualification and eligibility requirements must be met by the announcement closing date.

You may start at $117,191.00 (GS-14), if you possess the following specialized experience by the closing date of the announcement (in addition to the education requirement):

Specialized experience is defined as at least one year of experience at the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the private sector interpreting, applying, and implementing the principles and practices of actuarial science as they apply to single employer defined benefit pension plans. Examples may include: reviewing actuaries' benefit calculations and valuations to determine accuracy; researching and resolving technical actuarial issues; developing, implementing, and monitoring actuarial policies and procedures for benefit calculations and valuations, providing technical guidance on actuarial matters to actuaries; and developing and providing training to actuaries and other professionals on actuarial matters.

Education

In order to qualify for this position, you must possess:

A bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

In addition, the following actuarial credentials are desired, but not required: Associate of Society of Actuaries (ASA), Enrolled Actuary (EA), and/or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA)
