Job Announcement

Plans, supervises, organizes and executes the graphic production of Fairfax County Public Library's (FCPL) printed and electronic products including posters, bookmarks, flyers, brochures, signs, booklets, invitations, displays, annual reports, forms, certificates, newsletters, manuals, web graphics, kiosk graphics and other varied graphic design work. Responsible for the preparation of materials for county and commercial printing. Assigns, supervises, directs and reviews the work of subordinate graphic artist; and assigns and supervises the work of volunteer(s). Serves a member of the Library Social Media team. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of the FCPL.

Note: The salary offer for the position will not exceed midpoint (or $72,292.69) the advertised salary range.

Illustrative Duties

Assigns, supervises and reviews work of subordinate graphic artists;
Coordinates work of the section with the overall schedules and policies of the division;
Edits all work upon completion for accuracy and conformance with standards before referral to supervisor for final review;
Provides for the procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment;
Performs responsible graphic art work.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment used in mechanical and freehand drawings and lettering;
Knowledge of varied reproduction processes;
Ability to create and develop artistic ideas for covers, reports and displays;
Ability to supervise the work of others;
Ability to write clearly and effectively.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or GED issued by a state department of education; plus five years of experience in a field related to the graphic presentation of objects, facts or ideas.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Fine Arts with major in graphic design or communication arts. Two or more years of supervisory experience. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Knowledge of Microsoft Publisher, Word and PowerPoint along with photography skills and social media experience. Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with both external and internal customers. Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written form.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
Ability to travel to other sites to attend meetings and trainings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Eyesight must be sharp for selecting color tones. Dexterity sufficient to draw sketches, graphic arts projects, and take photographs with a camera. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Must be able to type on a keyboard. Ability to conduct presentations. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
