Responsibilities

  • Switch electrical power feeds from commercial to generator power, switch gear and transformers.
  • Operate and trouble shoot electrical breakers, switch gear and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
  • Operate generators to provide backup power.
  • Operate switch gear and transformer for electrical distribution to all East Coast.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment, boilers, UPS and minor maintenance on all generators in plant.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Stationary Engineer Grade 1 License within six months of employment.
  • Rotating shifts.
  • Heavy lifting (45 pounds).
  • Valid state driver?s license.
  • The incumbent of this position may be working in a hazardous area and as such may be required to wear protective clothing, receive immunizations, use protective equipment, and other specified safety procedures.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Electric Power Controller without more than normal supervision. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Eye and hand coordination is required to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications as well as prolonged sitting and standing in control room operations. When performing maintenance operations, the operator is subject to frequent bending, reaching, climbing, lifting and standing in cramped and awkward positions. Must lift items utilizing hoists, jacks and cranes. There is some heavy lifting in moving or repairing heavy units such as air conditioning equipment.

Working Conditions: The operator works in adequately heated and ventilated area while performing systems control operations. Works around high voltage (4,160 volts) and high current (3,000 amps) and is subject to heat, drafts and loud noises when working in proximity of generation equipment. Must wear appropriate safety devices as directed.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
