University of Maryland University College is seeking a Curator for its Arts Program. Reporting to the Director, Arts Programs, the Curator is responsible for managing the Arts Program rotating exhibition. Responsibility includes planning and coordinating exhibition programs, and assisting the Director in administering museum activities. The Curator also acquires museum items, by purchase or acceptance of donations, to develop and ensure collection growth in the museum; researches and writes history and descriptions of collection items to properly illustrate displays and catalogs items; develops and implements a conservation program to preserve the collections; selects and develops museum exhibitions and directs and coordinates exhibit activities; analyzes and recommends museum needs to the Director; participates in policy and procedure development; participates in the creation and implementation of a strategic plan for exhibitions: and work with other staff members on external exhibition(s).

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Coordinates exhibit design, planning, production, and installation including working with visual artists and raising funds to support the projects
  • Make sure new acquisitions are properly cataloged as well as work with the staff to care for the current museum items according to established methods and practices, including overseeing the museum's collection database (PastPerfect)
  • Researches and compiles materials for inclusion in the Arts Program's archives and for the use in exhibit programs and publications
  • Builds the collections for the museum through gifts and purchases and directs research to support collection acquisitions
  • Work with the Facility Technician/Registrar, interns, volunteers/docents of the Arts Program and also works with various departments at the University to achieve program goals and objectives
  • Provide guided tours of the collection and accept speaking engagements about the collection and department
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Masters of Arts in Museum Studies, Art History or related field.
  • Four to six (4 - 6) years of experience working in an art gallery, museum or related environment.
  • Knowledge of national, state, and local art, artists and art history; museum policies, practices, and procedures; art of multiple cultural groups to build a culturally diverse collection; cataloging software (PastPerfect) for museums; exhibit design and fabrication methods; scale, balance, proportion, and color.
  • The ability to develop educational outreach programs to all ages; attract new audiences and audience participation; work well with others in a small environment; communicate effectively; perform accessing and cataloging activities of museum materials; maintain records, prepare reports, and conduct correspondence; coordinate and plan traveling exhibitions; evaluate and make recommendations on future exhibitions.
  • The ability to work long hours, including some nights and weekends for exhibit openings, receptions and special projects; work on a ladder; lift at least 50 lbs; edit materials and articulate exhibit concepts and designs; work with artists and prospective donors.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Certificate in Archival Management, Collections Management, or Business Management and knowledge of Asian/Chinese art is preferred.
