The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the most famous space observatory in history. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021.

Our Project Reference Database Branch is seeking a Systems Configuration Manager to work with the JWST flight and ground systems teams. Your role and responsibilities:

A Software Configuration Manager in this role is part of the JWST Project Reference Database (PRD) team and is responsible for designing and developing a system to record and track configurable items for the Science & Operations Center (S&OC) at STScI. The S&OC is composed of several interacting software subsystems. S&OC teams like the proposal planning and data archive teams are involved in the software development process and operations activities. We need to track and record information from the operational environments, and make this available to S&OC personnel.

  • You will define the overall configuration management solution, including processes and technology that supports the key workflows and control points
  • You will select and tailor a tool to implement for the S&OC configuration management solution
  • You will work in collaboration with the mission office on the configuration control of the data
  • You will ensure that relationships between configured items are accurate and useful
  • You will train the team how to use the configuration management system
  • You will establish some objective measures of the effectiveness of the configuration management process

Your Qualifications and Job Requirements:

You have the ability to effectively organize configuration items, attributes, relationships, and categories in a database design into a set of entities and relationships. You have at least 5-7 years of software configuration management experience.. You have experience using configuration management tools and with tracking changes to a complex system.

You are typically eager to learn and grow in your career, demonstrate great versatility and teamwork. You are a creative problem-solver with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

You have experience with complex requirements and related activities including requirements generation, interface definitions, verification, and validation activities. You have the ability to develop and maintain operations concepts and related documentation.

We are looking for applicants with experience with the following:

  • Using Configuration Management systems and tools
  • Using version control and ticket reporting tools and processes
  • Flight or ground systems for spacecraft operations a plus
  • Building SQL tables, queries and forms
  • Building and maintaining Web services
  • Building XML schema and XSL
  • Working knowledge of Java or Python or other programming languages
  • Analytical troubleshooting, problem solving, and writing and maintaining documentation

You should have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical or scientific field. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered. The starting salary is commensurate to your education and experience.

Candidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident for qualification for ITAR clearance.
