This position is a TERM position. It is time-limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
Serves as a Maintenance Mechanic (MVO) to perform a variety of maintenance duties such as maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities using a variety of trade practices such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical work and other related trades. They include replacement/repair of electrical systems, lighting fixtures, switches, sockets, etc.; heating systems, repair/replacement of plumbing fixtures, etc.; basic carpentry, general painting.
Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, drawings, and repair manuals; performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical wiring system circuits, lines and associated fixtures. HVAC Systems. Installs, repairs and troubleshoots a variety of large HVAC units. Makes decision(s) regarding repairs to complex equipment and systems in view of the industrial and administrative needs of the systems. Understands the components (e.g., superheaters, economizers, baffles, breechings, and valves), numerous parts and connections, primary and sub-systems, power sources and other technical information related to HVAC systems. Performs a variety of plumbing maintenance and repair work which involves removing, cleaning, replacing, packing and sealing defective parts of utility, supply and disposal system. Perform snow removal and de-icing operations during inclement weather as deemed necessary. The incumbent is responsible for responding to off-duty calls to accomplish snow removal and de-icing operations. Snow removal will normally be accomplished using a variety of snow removal equipment (shovels, carts, blowers, etc.). Incumbent will drive a Government Owned Vehicle between sites to pick up parts/materials to make repairs at the facility; and the Regional Logistics Manager and/or the USACE Logistics Activity Center may need support at other facility locations.

Travel Required

Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position. Temporary Duty Travel is about 20% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic (MVO)~ without more than normal supervision. Perform some maintenance duties such as maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities using a variety of trade practices. Installs, repairs and troubleshoots a variety of large HVAC units. Perform snow removal during inclement weather as deemed necessary.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts of the system worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Required to stand, walk, crawl, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hand, foot, and eye coordination is required in operating motor vehicles. Frequent arm and leg movement is required.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside. Inside work is usually in buildings, heated, lighted, and ventilated. Noise from hammers, saws, and other power tools is common. Subject to dust and dirt; cuts and bruises from using hand tools and equipment; or possible more serious injuries from operating power tools or from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Subject to electrical shock and burns. Possibility of injuries as a result of accident while driving motor vehicles. May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOPs.

  • Must Must obtain and maintain a Journeyman Electrician License within 48 months, which includes 240 hours formal vocational training or similar training/education.
