Summary

The Physician (Neurologist) provides care to the veteran patients in the Neurology Department Chronic Pain Clinic at the Washington VA Medical Center. The Physician provides services such as diagnosing, treating and managing veteran patients with complex chronic pain conditions while working closely with all members of the Chronic Pain Clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the general Neurology Clinic and the inpatient Neurologist service duties as Attending physician on the inpatient consultation team.
  • Participate in the teaching as supervision of Neurology residents and medical students and other trainees rotating through the Neurology service and outside of the Neurology department within the DC VAMC.
  • Participate in on-call duties for the Department of Neurology including weekend and evening/night-time hours as needed to fulfill his/her obligations in the clinical care of the patients.
  • Participate in Pain telehealth aspects including telehealth group visits and a pilot project funded by VISN 5 for pain care within a "Virtual Hospital" environment.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm. Due to the nature of the work, the physician may occasionally be required to stay later than 4:30 p.m., as required. As part of the Neurology service, the physician will participate in on-call duties that will require work on weekends and evenings/nights, outside of hours of regular tour of duty.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/29/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience:
  • Subspecialty board certification in pain medicine.
  • Interest and/or training in pain medicine to participate in our inpatient and outpatient neurology program and to participate in seeing patients with chronic pain in our multidisciplinary pain program.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patient and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or
operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.The physician may be exposed to surroundings which involve moderate risks or discomfort which require special precautions, i.e., infectious diseases, verbal and physical abuse from the emotionally disturbed patient.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
