Summary

About the Position: The incumbent serves as a Food Service Worker Supervisor in the Nutrition Services Department (NSD) of a medical treatment facility (MTF) with responsibility for the serving area operation in the dining facility, as well as the operation of cash registers, cash collection and turn in. The incumbent is a working supervisor and spends 25% of the time performing non-supervisory duties alongside subordinate workers.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure equipment and supplies are properly maintained to prevent delays.
  • Review work in progress and upon completion to ensure quality.
  • Explain work requirements to ensure subordinates clearly understand rules and procedures.
  • Counsel employees on problems or performance to maintain a good work environment.
  • Initiate proposals for disciplinary actions to correct inappropriate actions.
  • Identify training needs to ensure employees are educated on regulations and techniques.
  • Establish daily work assignments to ensure all areas are covered.
  • Certify time and attendance records for subordinates.
  • Plan, establish, and approve all department leave schedule.
  • Ensure that adequate materials and equipment are available in the ward pantries.
  • Train subordinates on the use and care of kitchen equipment.
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained and properly used.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may require a suitability/fitness determination.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Making minor adjustments as necessary to accomplish work effectively and economically, and uphold quality standards; Identify training needs to ensure employees are educated on regulations and techniques; Establish daily work assignments to ensure all areas are covered; Redirect Salad Preparation Food Service Workers as needed to accomplish any unexpected workload; Prescribes work sequence for individual workers based upon Salad/Vegetable Preparation requirements; Train subordinates on the use and care of kitchen equipment; Counsel employees on problems or performance to maintain a good work environment.   • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires continual standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, frequently stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. Maybe required to work on ladders and perform heavy work such as scouring large size cooking utensils and moving heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas where steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably hot temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted, but usually hot and noisy from food service activities. Worker is exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. The worker is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
