The Chief Nurse of Extended Care Services is Master's or Doctoral prepared registered nurse who has demonstrated competence in professional practice in progressively more responsible leadership assignments. The Chief Nurse is accountable to the Associate Director Patient/Nursing Service and provides primary assistance in the overall administration of Nursing Service. The Chief Nurse oversees the Extended Care Service Line, including Home based Community Care and Home Community Health Care.

Duties and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Responsibilities include planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating programs and outcomes; daily attention to complex personnel management problems; participation in executive level decision making deliberations, and provides direction for the development and implementation of established standards of nursing practice.
  • Supervises three Nurse Managers, two MDS Coordinators, one Restorative Nurse and one Clinical Nurse Leader.
  • Accountable and responsible for possessing the knowledge and skills to communicate and interact appropriately and courteously with all internal and external customers, maintain confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient/employee information, demonstrate working practices that include adherence to Infection Control standards and the safe use and operation of equipment.
  • Identifies and reports all unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel to ensure a safe environment for all patients, medical center personnel, and visitors, as well as practices safe working habits to avoid damage to government equipment, building structures, and motor vehicles.
  • Maintains routine activities within the assigned area, prioritizes non-routine activities and responds to those requiring attention during the absence of the Associate Director Patient/Nursing Service (ADP/NS).
  • Promotes a climate in which employees are encouraged to report those situations that may adversely affect the delivery of patient care.
  • Provides for appropriate staffing at the unit level.
  • Gives daily attention to complex personnel management, administrative or clinical problems within assigned area.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding more efficient and effective use of staff and other resources.
  • Maintains sound fiscal management and establishes priorities for distributing resources based on program needs.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, Joint Commission and other accreditation standards through appropriate interpretation to staff with the assigned area.
  • Functions as a liaison between service and the medical and support staff in their assigned areas.
  • Maintains and supports effective labor-management partnerships and participates in negotiations of agreements as requested.

Tour of Duty: 7:45 am- 4:30 pm; nights and weekends as needed

    Basic Requirements:
      United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduation from School of Nursing
    • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
    • The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or
    • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • OR
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
    • OR
    • In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (see paragraph 2a(3)) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
      BLS and ACLS required
    Preferred Experience:
    • Within the last 6 years, a minimum of 4 years managing and directing Geriatrics and Extended Care Services, to include Community Living Center, with areas such as Hospice/Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Long Term Care, as well as Home Based Primary Care or a skilled rehab facility.
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience managing human and capital resources, as well as service/quality improvement activities.

    Grade Determinations:
    The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    • Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements:
    Lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirement include recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, writing, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace may vary from steady to fast paced, requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes.
