This position is located in the Center or Financing, Access, and Cost Trends (CFACT), Division of Statistical and Research Methods (DSRM) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The duty location for this position is in Rockville, MD.

Responsibilities

As a Mathematical Statistician, you will apply statistical and mathematical theory and techniques to the design and analysis of national probability health care surveys and supplemental data collection activities conducted or sponsored by AHRQ.

Specifically, you will:
  • Develop innovative data collection and estimation strategies to reduce sources of non-sampling error, improve validity, and cost effectiveness of data produced in national health care surveys of households and medical providers.
  • Develop data collection and estimation strategies to reduce sources of non-sampling error.
  • Develop reports for use in oral presentations at seminars, workshops, and scientific meetings.
  • Provide technical guidance on statistical methods and analysis of complex survey data to members of Offices/Centers within AHRQ and other government agencies.
  • Review and evaluate statistical merit and application of mathematical and statistical theory and technique in projects and research proposals.

Qualifications

THESE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET BY THE CLOSING DATE: 07/19/2019

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

A. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement. NOTE: A copy of your Official or Unofficial transcripts are required by the closing date of the announcement.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicable experience should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. NOTE: A copy of your Official or Unofficial transcripts are required by the closing date of the announcement.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

In addition to meeting the education requirement, to qualify for this GS-13 Mathematical Statistician, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying experience include the following types of tasks performed on a regular and recurring basis: Utilizing mathematical/statistical theory and techniques to the design/analysis of national probability health care surveys and supplemental data collection activities focusing on health care utilization/expenditures; conducting mathematical/statistical principles and techniques such as weighting, imputation, probabilistic matching, modeling, statistical inference and various estimation using appropriate statistical software focusing on health care utilization/expenditures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.

Education

This position has an education requirement.
