Responsibilities

This position is located in Health Informatics & Telehealth Service, Richmond VA Medical Center. The position is for an Internal Medicine or Family Medicine physician who will be responsible for the delivery of primary care to patients by means of telehealth. The position utilizes clinical video telehealth (CVT) and other virtual modalities to remotely deliver primary care services to patients in other medical centers and associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics in other geographic locations. The physician will provide direct patient care full time, and work as a member of an expanded healthcare team (clinical pharmacist, behavioral health clinician, and/or a care manager) to oversee and coordinate medical care for a population of Veterans utilizing the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model. The incumbent will report directly to the Lead Physician/ Tele-Primary Care within Health Informatics & Telehealth Service. Board certificated/Board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice preferred.

The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

-Perform primary care services across the spectrum including wellness to chronic disease management, women's health care, preventive health care, pain management, and population health management of assigned patients.

-Duties will also include management of acute symptoms/conditions of assigned and unassigned patients.

-Perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients. History and physical examinations will mostly rely on the use of CVT technology, but some direct face-to-face visits will also be needed.

-Provide ongoing outpatient and follow up of inpatient care for assigned patients.

-Screen outpatients to determine need for further care.

-Review and prescribe medications.

-Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs).

-Review need for and order health promotion and disease prevention activities.

-Initiate, respond to and expedite requests for consultations, special tests and studies.

-Provide education and counseling to patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

-Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with VA & facility policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion.

Work Schedule : Typical work hours are Monday to Friday, 8am-4:30pm, and a full time provider is required to work a minimum of 80 hours per pay period. This may include evening and weekend working hours. Shifts may deviate from the usual 8am-4:30pm shift schedule.

Salary : The applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Primary Care experience preferred.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
