Summary

GAO seeks non-paid student volunteers to encourage interest in public service careers and provide valuable work experience. As a non-paid volunteer, a student will gain first- hand experience within GAO's work environment, learn about the federal government and perform a variety of tasks related to supporting GAO activities.

Responsibilities

The specific duties and responsibilities associated with this position will vary based on the team or office assignments. The following list is intended to provide applicants with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities.

Offices:

Audit Policy and Quality Assurance (APQA) assists the Comptroller General, the Chief Operating Officer, and mission teams in ensuring GAO's products are of the highest quality.

Congressional Relations (CR) fosters and maintains liaison with congressional committees, and Members of Congress and keeps GAO staff informed of significant developments in Congress.

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) advises GAO's managers and analysts; and prepares testimony and reports on subjects reflecting a range of government activity.

The Continuous Process Improvement Office (CPIO) drives positive change in mission and mission support operations to ensure GAO conducts work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

The Office of Opportunity and Inclusiveness (O&I) helps promote and maintain a work environment that is fair, unbiased, and inclusive.

The Office of Public Affairs (OPA) works to maximize the impact of GAO's message and coordinates communication with the press and the public.

Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL) supports GAO in improving accountability and governance in the United States and other countries by providing strategic focus and sharing knowledge.

Office of the Inspector General (OIG) independently conducts audits, evaluations, and other reviews of GAO programs and operations and makes recommendations to promote the agency's economy, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Office of the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) implements agency-wide programs, is responsible for internal communications, and oversees the financial, information technology, human capital, and knowledge services functions.

Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO) provides financial and business operations services that support GAO in developing policies and guidance related to budget planning, financial management activities, and procurements.

The Human Capital Office (HCO) develops and manages a wide range of human capital policies, programs, and services.

Infrastructure Operations (IO) is responsible for administrative and operational support services, such as facilities and property management, safety, security, emergency preparedness and privacy.

Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS) provides GAO staff the information technology (IT) tools they need to do their work and seeks to be a model IT service provider.

The Learning Center (LC) provides quality learning and development aligned with GAO priorities to create a workforce that continuously improves individual, team, and organizational effectiveness.

Professional Development Program Operations supports new employees at the Band I level of the Program and Technical pay plan (PT-1). The PDP-Operations is intended to maximize these employees productivity, enhance their job satisfaction, and encourage their retention

Student Volunteer Program Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Actively enrolled at least half-time in a degree seeking accredited educational institution
  • Good Academic standing
  • Available to work at least 20 hours a week
  • Free from conflict of interest
  • Must be able to pass a valid background check willing to sign a non disclosure agreement
  • Continued enrollment in qualifying academic program for the duration of volunteer service.
  • Letter of reccomendation from a teacher, counselor or school administrator(High School Applicants ONLY)


Qualifications

In addition to the Key Requirements listed in this vacancy annoucement the Student Volunteer must also possess the following qualities:

Ability to work well in a team environment

Ability to communicate orally and in writing to a variety of audiences

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to organize a variety of assignements simultaneously to meet deadlines.

A working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

Education

Student Status: Definition of a student- applicant must be enrolled in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two year or four year college or university, graduate or professional school. You must be considered in good academic standing. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled.

Additional information

Student Volunteers may work during the school year and/or during summer or school vacation periods. The nature of the volunteer assignment as well as the work schedule will be established once on-board.

If you are selected for a student volunteer position, you must provide a copy of your report card or Official transcripts on the day of your orientation or within 3 business days immediately following your orientation. These documents must show your current student status.

For minors age 16 or 17: If selected for a student volunteer position, you must also submit a work permit prior to coming onboard.

Failure to meet the requirements or provide documentation as stated above may result in termination of your student volunteer internship.

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education .
