Summary

These positions are located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Director for Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. There are several vacancies.

This is a standing-register/open-continuous announcement. Applicants will be reviewed for consideration every 14 days.. This announcement will keep running until June 28, 2019 or until all positions have been filled, whichever comes sooner.

Responsibilities

  • As a Practical Nurse, you will provide nursing care to pediatric patients.
  • Take vital signs. Perform hearing and vision screening. Perform point-of-care-testing, such as Hcg, Hgb, lead, glucose, rapid strep, etc. Perform metabolic screening on newborns.
  • Monitor/observe patients that will be admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Emergency Room (ER), or ward.
  • Prepare patients information for morning huddles for the Medical Home Teams.
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as: pediatric IV insertions and blood drawl, Cyrotherapy, ear irrigation , oxygen and nebulizer treatments, assisting with licensed providers, etc.
  • Set up medical equipment and equipment for pediatric procedures. Administer pediatric intramuscular antibiotics and immunizations.
  • Clean up exam/treatment rooms, medical instruments/supplies, and the supply cabinets.
  • Utilize an electronic medical/healthcare system to input or retrieve data in the patient's medical record/chart.
  • Educate patients and their family members on health, disease management, and their test results.
  • Communicate with patients and their family members on a regular basis via phone and secure messaging.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has specific background investigation and periodic re-investigation requirements since its duties require contact with children.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual season influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempt for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a Testing Designated Position (TDP). You will be subject to an initial pre-employment urinalysis screening and random screenings thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any shift, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, or on an on-call/as-needed basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • For this clinic, there is an early morning shift, late afternoon shift, and potential weekend hours.
  • This position is designated as mission essential during inclement weather conditions and/or or other appropriate emergency situations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the licensure and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Licensure: Candidates must be currently licensed to practice as practical or vocational nurses in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia or must have applied for a license to practice. Applications of candidates possessing a license must be accompanied by a certified or photostatic copy of the license, a notarized statement attesting to the fact, or a citation of the license number and State issuing it. Candidates that do not currently have a license but have applied for one must furnish the date which you applied for a license and the jurisdiction involved.

Experience: Applicants must demonstrate in their resume at least one year of pediatric nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures, performing such duties as: providing nursing care to pediatric patients; monitoring and responding to patient issues; assisting physicians and registered nurses; setting up medical equipment; and reviewing or updating patient records/charts. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the federal service, GS-05, or equivalent.
