Responsibilities

The Project Finance Program at OPIC is made up of the Structured Finance (SF) team, located within the Structured Finance and Insurance Department (SFI) and the Small and Medium Enterprise Finance Department (SMEF). Loan officers for both teams support projects located in less developed countries and areas where American investment is involved. The SF Team specializes in infrastructure, energy projects, financial sector, telecommunications, health care and other highly complex transactions. SMEF focuses on energy, housing, Impact Investing and many other industries such as financial services, hotels, and manufacturing. Students interested in Impact Investing finance should apply directly to the Socially Responsible Investing team or the Social Enterprise Finance team.

When working for SF or SMEF, interns get exposure to international project finance and work in collaboration with seasoned financiers in the loan origination process. The life cycle of a loan starts with underwriting and due diligence on the project, its sponsors and other related parties. This is followed by an approval process whereby papers are written for the purpose of obtaining approval from OPIC's Credit Policy team, Investment Committee and, depending on the size of the OPIC support, the Board of Directors. Project teams then negotiate the loan agreement which leads to disbursement of funds to a project. After disbursement, a project is transferred to one of two monitoring groups in DFPM.

Interns on the Structured Finance and Insurance (SFI) teams serve as junior analysts and may be involved in all stages of project approval as part of a project team. Interns typically work on three to six transactions, de-pending on the complexity of the projects and the amount of time an intern is available. Typical duties include:
  • Reviewing applications for financing;
  • Reviewing existing financial statements of the sponsor or of the project;
  • Building, analyzing and running sensitivities of financial models of projected project cash flows;
  • Writing country political and economic summaries and political risk analyses;
  • Preparing portions of loan papers being presented to Credit or Investment Committee;
  • Collaborating with Investment Officers to present the proposed loan to an approval committee;
  • Working with members of other departments to receive required policy clearances; and
  • Working with a project team to assist in the processing of disbursement requests.
