An Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator, in pursuit of service excellence, will operate heavy, multi-purpose equipment with complex controls requiring a high degree of skill and manipulative ability. The work in this class requires considerable skill, especially in constructing grades and in operating heavy equipment efficiently to avoid stopping the progress of related operations. Standard procedures are followed and the work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. This class differs from that of Equipment Operator II in the higher degree of skill required for finished grading and comparable tasks, and the greater possible consequences of error in the form of damage to more expensive equipment. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers I, II and III and/or Equipment Operators I and II. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of a Labor Supervisor or a Superintendent.

The Opportunity
  • Operates multi-purpose equipment in laying storm drains;
  • Operates a tandem axle dump truck;
  • Operates a rubber tire loader to load trucks with materials;
  • Operates track loader, front-end loader & backhoe;
  • Assists Assistant Superintendents in performance of daily program monitoring duties;
  • Keeps equipment clean and reports any malfunctions of equipment to fleet management shop;
  • Operates snow removal equipment as needed;
  • Operates a ten wheel dump truck in the operation of snow plowing, and de-icing;
  • Leads a crew in special clean up details;
  • Makes minor repairs on equipment;
  • Trains subordinates in equipment operation; and Performs related work as required.

The ideal candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a high School Diploma or GED; three (3) years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment; one (1) year of supervisory experience; thorough knowledge of the proper methods of transporting heavy loads and load limits; traffic and safety rules and accident prevention practices; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Skills in the operation of heavy multi-purpose motor equipment under all types of weather conditions. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsements in the state of residency.

To be considered as an Ideal candidate, one should also possess four (4) or more years of experience in the operation of heavy multi-purpose construction equipment. Experienced with the proper procedure for repairing asphalt pavement, concrete curbs and gutters, brickwork, sidewalks, utility repairs and supervisory experience.
