Job Details

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the nation's leading nonpartisan public policy think tank dedicated to the competition of ideas, is looking to fill a critical senior leadership role-a director for our Foreign and Defense Policy Studies program, one of AEI's four major research divisions. This position reports directly to AEI's president and is responsible for managing more than 30 resident and visiting scholars and fellows.

AEI's Foreign and Defense Policy Studies program is dedicated to the principle that American global leadership is vital to a peaceful, prosperous, and free world. Through nonpartisan research and analysis that advances actionable solutions over abstract theories, our scholars develop policy recommendations to keep America safe and help secure an international order that benefits people everywhere. Our research spans the world's geopolitical flashpoints and includes regions and countries such as the Middle East, China and East Asia, India, Europe, Latin America, and Russia and topics such as national security and defense, global terrorism, transnational threats, and economic statecraft.

Major responsibilities of the division's director include executing the mission of AEI's Foreign and Defense Policy program and the Institute's core values more broadly; offering guidance and feedback on the research agendas and scholarship of the division's scholars and fellows; developing a strategic plan for the division's research areas of focus; broadly overseeing the research division's budget; identifying and recruiting senior and junior scholars and fellows; conducting outreach to journalists, AEI donors, policymakers, students, and other constituent groups; and producing his or her own scholarly work.

The ideal candidate will possess a keen understanding and support for the program's mission as well as that of AEI more broadly; deep knowledge and experience working on or in foreign or defense policy; first-rate written and verbal communication skills; experience managing large teams and operating in a fast-paced environment; and excellent interpersonal skills as well as sound judgement. A Bachelor's and/or Master's degrees are required in applicable areas of study, such as history, international studies, law, political science, public administration, public policy, or security studies; Ph.D. a plus. At least 10 years of experience working in academic, non-profit, government, or for-profit sector in related foreign policy or defense field.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to submit a resume, cover letter, and research abstract with their on-line application at www.aei.org/jobs .
