Assistant Director - Return of Post-9/11 Educational Benefits

Regular, Exempt, Full-Time, Grade 2.1

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Assistant Director - Return of Post-9/11 Educational Benefits. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the overall administration and management of the return of Post-9/11 Educational Benefit payments, overseeing the preparation of reports and records to ensure accountability under current Department of Veterans Affairs policies and practices. The position reports to the Director of the Veteran Certification Office and will be responsible for a staff of four to organize workflow and processes.

Collaboration with staff members of UMUC's Office of Student Accounts will be frequent.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Serve as UMUC's primary designee for resolution of all institutional Post-9/11 Educational Benefit overpayment issues
  • Oversees quality control of payment resolution process to ensure timely and accurate
  • Interprets and applies all updates to Department of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures and works will all UMUC offices to ensure compliance
  • Supervise four (4) office staff members who will assist in the payment resolution process
  • Collaborate with Director to develop communications to students on overpayment issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Position requires a BA/BS degree and two years of aggregate experience in an accounting, financial compliance or higher education administration environment.
  • Successful candidates must possess exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with organization management, analytical and problem solving skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize projects with deadlines; work accurately and quickly with attention to detail.
  • Must possess the ability to work as part of a team, with a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Computer literacy is required, specifically with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Access).

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience with PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Knowledge of Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefit programs, as well as those programs' supporting certification and debt-management processes, is strongly preferred.
