Summary

This is a temporary position duty stationed at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania NMP. The primary purpose of the work is custodial and janitorial.

Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is October thru April, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: October 27, 2019.

Responsibilities

This is a janitorial/custodial position requiring work indoors and outdoors. Work is accomplished by hand or with powered equipment.
  • Sweeping, scrubbing/waxing floors, washing windows, dusting, etc. (using power equipment such as buffers, vacuums, etc. when applicable)
  • Moves heavy items (i.e. furniture, supplies, equipment)
  • Cleans restrooms, offices, shop areas, visitor areas
  • Uses ladders and scaffolds to wash and/or replace equipment or fixtures (i.e. blinds, light bulbs)
  • Pick up litter
  • Perform trash collection and empty trash receptacles (indoors/outdoors)
  • Operate light duty motor vehicles to transport material and/or equipment to various park locations
  • Performs minor maintenance to equipment (i.e. adjusting, cleaning, oiling, changing attachments)
  • May provide general labor assistance in maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. (i.e. mowing, raking, shoveling snow)

This position is located in the Maintenance Division of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Please visit the park's website for additional park information. Fredericksburg, Virginia is approximately 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 60 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. The colonial and Civil War history of the area, as well as many recreational opportunities on local waterways and natural areas make the Fredericksburg area a popular tourist destination. The park's battlefields and historic structures span four counties in the Fredericksburg area, with the highest population density being in the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford County and Spotsylvania County areas. Many options for schools, shopping, dining, cultural opportunities and medical care are easily accessed. Within a short drive from these growing populations centers, you will find yourself in the more rural and scenic Virginia countryside. The local climate is temperate, with hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters.

  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    Appointments to these positions are restricted to veteran' preference eligibles unless there are no qualified preference eligibles available or qualified.     Physical Demands: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.
