Adjunct Faculty in Mechanical Engineering, Volgenau School of Engineering

The George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, invites interested applicants to join the faculty as part-time Adjunct Faculty members beginning fall 2019. Adjunct faculty members are needed to either teach required course(s) in the major, or through engineering expertise develop elective course(s) that meet the needs of the program.

Specific program needs for technical electives courses should be centered around the NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/challenges.aspx which includes themes such as improving urban infrastructure, making solar energy economical, engineering the tools of scientific discovery, etc.

Courses are offered at both the Fairfax Campus and Science and Technology Campus during daytime or evening hours.

Expertise in the following courses are needed: * ME 231-001 Dynamics TR 3pm-4:15pm Fairfax Campus * ME 322-001 Fluid Mechanics MW 9am-10:15am SciTech Campus * ME 342-002 Design of Thermal Systems MW 3pm-4:15pm SciTech Campus * ME 415-001 Composite Materials MW 4:30pm-5:45pm Fairfax Campus * ME 471-001 Introduction to Astronautics MW 4:30pm-5:45pm Fairfax Campus * ME 472-001 Spacecraft Subsystems MW 5:55pm-7:10pm Fairfax Campus * ME 499-014 Computer Design MW 8:45pm-10pm Fairfax Campus * ME 499 Special Topics in ME MW TBD Fairfax Campus * ME 499 TBD N/A Online

Additional expertise is also being solicited to mentor senior design projects during the 2019-2020 catalog year for the ME 443 and 444 courses. Mentors will commit to the entire academic year and can create a flexible schedule based on the senior design team's availability. Mentors are responsible for regularly scheduled team meetings, peer review of design and testing requirements, feedback on written reports, etc.

Responsibilities: * Prepare and teach assigned courses at assigned class meetings, based on course catalog description and approved course outline; * Prepare and objectively grade class assignments and exams within a timely manner, in accordance with course outcomes; * Maintain accurate, transparent student records; * Assist and foster student success through the maintenance of regularly scheduled office hours and timely responses to e-mail inquiries; * Adhere to all administrative university policies such as the timely submission of completed midterm and final grades; * Maintain appropriate professional development to stay current within assigned courses; * Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; and * Other duties as assigned by contract and/or by the Course Coordinator.

Required Qualifications: * Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field; * Solid verbal and written communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications: * Terminal degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field; * Experience with a learning management system, preferably Blackboard; * Relevant professional experience; * Teaching experience at the college level.
