Summary

This position is located in The Office of Finance & Accounting (OF&A). The employee will develop and implement a risk management strategy and methodology to identify, assess, prioritize and mitigate risks to ensure the Smithsonian Institution (SI) defines and manages its exposure to all forms of risk.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a formal integrated risk management (IRM) strategy and methodology to identify, assess, prioritize and mitigate risks that could have a major impact on the organization's ability to operate.
  • Develop and formalize program governance including policies and procedures
  • Monitor and analyze risks within the units - provide guidance, as requested; suggest collaborations, as appropriate; and escalate, as necessary.
  • Implement an annual risk assessment process that includes identification and escalation of risks ensuring all risk categories are managed.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as leading, managing, implementing and/or executing major risk management program activities (i.e., evaluation, control, funding, etc.,) in a Federal, independent, quasi-governmental or non-profit organizations; developing and formalizing program governance including policies and procedures; establishing and executing plan to address key risk issues in all variety of areas and/or analyzing trends in risk data to identify, assess, prioritize and mitigate.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  • Knowledge of and skill in developing, managing and analyzing a risk framework using Enterprise Risk Management and/or integrated Risk Management models.
  • Knowledge of and skill in performing all aspects of risk management, including evaluation, control and funding, within a large, diversified non-profit, Federal or quasi-governmental organization.
  • Skill in relationship building in order to establish and maintain collegial and cooperative relationships and to work on cross-functional teams inside and outside the organization.
  • Knowledge of and skill applying insurance mitigation programs including casualty, property and/or other insurance programs/coverages.
