Responsibilities

The BLS is the principal Federal statistical agency responsible for measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and price changes in the economy. Its mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate essential economic information to support the public and private decision-making that forms the basis of our democratic, free-enterprise system. Like all Federal statistical agencies, the BLS executes its statistical mission with independence, serving its users by providing products and services that are accurate, objective, relevant, timely, and accessible.

These positions are located in the DOL, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Office of Administration, Division of Administration Services, Branch of Building Operations.

- These positions have promotion potential to GS-12. Promotion Potential: There is no obligation to provide future promotions to you if you are selected. Future promotions are dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and supervisory approval.

- These positions are outside the bargaining unit.

At the GS-07 and GS-09 level duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Supports the internal security program by ensuring security control panels, sound alarms, or visual observation of unsecured ingress/egress areas, and in employing all security measures necessary to safeguard BLS personnel and prevent unauthorized entry.
  • Participates in the Personal Identification Verification (PIV) program, including Identification (ID) Card enrollment and issuance processes. As part of the PIV program, supports processes related to background investigations.
  • As instructed, uses established procedures and guidelines to monitor employee and visitor access and egress control, the ID Card and Card Key security system, and the use and operation of new and upgraded equipment and systems.
  • Supports the lock program. Maintains records of all locks installed, their location, and the type of lock. As assigned responds to lock out of safes, doors and rooms where keys are lost or combinations are not working properly.
  • Supports the agency parking program. Ensures compliance with agency permit policies, access control and other related security and facilities matters.
  • Participates in and provides security direction in response to emergencies, evacuations and Shelter in Place events.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-07 level applicants MUST meet one of the following:

A. Education: A Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (i.e., 2.95 GPA or higher); OR 1 full year of graduate level education.

OR

B. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent in scope and responsibility to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the federal service. This experience could have been obtained in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as contributing to the safety and physical protection of property and personnel from unwarranted intrusion or other infractions of the peace of a property, including participating in the formulation of written plans or reports; contributing to the resolution of general safety hazards and security vulnerability issues; and assisting in the implementation of measures to eliminate or control such hazards and vulnerabilities. YOUR RESUME MUST INCLUDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF YOUR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

OR

C. Combination of Education and Experience: More than one year but less than the required education as described in A above, AND specialized experience as described in B above, but less than one year. When combined, the percentage of the education and specialized experience requirements completed must be at least 100%.

To qualify at the GS-09 level, applicants MUST meet one of the following:

A. Education: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree.

OR

B. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent in scope and responsibility to the next lower grade level (GS-07) in the federal service. This experience could have been obtained in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as contributing to the safety and physical protection of property from unwarranted intrusion or other infractions of the peace of a property, including formulating written plans or reports; recommending solutions for general to moderately complex safety hazard and security vulnerability issues; and implementing measures to eliminate, mitigate, or control such hazards and vulnerabilities. YOUR RESUME MUST INCLUDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF YOUR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE.

OR

C. Combination of Education and Experience: More than one year but less than the required education as described in A above, AND specialized experience as described in B above, but less than one year. When combined, the percentage of the education and specialized experience requirements completed must be at least 100%.

Education

If specific course work is required to fulfill the minimum qualification requirements, you must supply transcripts from each academic institution in which the required courses were taken in order to receive credit for that course work.
