Pipe & Manhole Repair

Operates a variety of medium and light equipment, including a tandem-axle dump truck, single-axle dump truck, backhoe, road roller, skid-steer loader, mini-excavator, compressed air tools, etc., in all phases of wastewater infrastructure and road construction (scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transport, excavations, etc.). Conducts daily inspection, routine maintenance, and light repair on such equipment. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks, such as digging, loading, asphalt leveling, raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and other heavy physical work. Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when operating and working near medium/small equipment. Duties are performed under supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Responsibilities:
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with Wastewater safety programs and guidelines.
  • Complies with the standards of the county, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services guiding principles.
  • Follows all applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.
Note: Wastewater positions are essential to providing uninterrupted sewer service to county residents, during inclement weather emergencies or other types of operational emergencies. As such, this position may be designated as emergency services personnel for purposes of continuity of operations and may be required to respond during inclement weather or emergency situations. This position is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to work emergency overtime, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents, trainings, and exercises."

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" or higher.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of work experience operating a truck and equipment. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee of this position will be required to complete the following to the satisfaction of the hiring department: criminal background check, driving recording check, pre-employment examination and commercial driver's license screening.

NOTE: Is required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without reasonable accommodation. Pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (Including removal and replacement of manhole covers that weigh up to 50 pounds). Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness. Must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders. Entry includes use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Protective equipment specific to confined space work includes hardhat, eye protection, safety toe boots, personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment.
