This National Guard position is for a PAINTER, Position Description Number D2127000and is part of the Maryland Army National Guard.

Responsibilities

As a Painter, WG-4102-09, you will prepare surfaces (i.e., metal, wood and glass) by removing rust, paint, and loose particles. Fills in holes and dents using body fillers and hardeners. Sands and evens out dents and scars to assure a smooth and level surface using sanders, scrapers, sandpaper, hand tools, wire brushes, and paint remover. Applies coatings to specified areas ensuring the surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips. Applies rustproof compound to areas such as splash panels, quarter panels, seams structural members, and underbody construction. Applies coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray paint equipment. Prepare coating materials using guidelines set by the manufacturer, by tinting, toning, etching, blending, and mixing in various additives (i.e., retardants, hardeners, drying agents, and other additives) needed for the different coatings to work properly and achieve the necessary surface appearance. Uses measuring equipment (i.e., Zhan cup) to achieve the proper viscosity and thickness for applying the coatings. Applies prime, intermediate and final coats of semi-gloss, gloss and other paint, lacquer, enamel, varnish and shellac. Ensures that match, texture and appearance meet finish requirements. Replaces and applies markings/lettering as specified by appropriate manuals. Apply coatings using acceptable methods of the trade to include special finishing techniques to achieve desired results. Reads and interprets blueprints when applying camouflage patterns. Replaces markings and letterings as specified by the appropriate manuals. Reads and interprets directions that relate to mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, and precoating agents. Monitor and adjusts air pressures in paint booth, controls heat settings and drying times in drying booth to achieve proper surface adhesion of coatings. Completes records for paint usage and paint waste as per environmental regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS :

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. GENERAL EXPERIENCE : Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of surface preparation (removal of rust, dirt, paint, etc); coating methods (brushing, rolling, and spraying); and coating materials (paints, varnishes, shellacs, etc). Must have the ability to use tools and equipment
associated with the painting trade and to read and interpret directions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of any surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Skill in building up, shaping, and leveling surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds; obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone; even out dents and scars by burning-in processes; and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):
--Knowledge of any accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques to apply coatings to stationary and mobile equipment, and to combat, tactical, and commercial vehicles. Skill in preparing the surface for paint by using compounds and abrasive to even out dents and scars. Skill to remove rust, paint, and loose particles from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly.
--Ability to prepare coating materials by tinting, toning, etching, blending, and mixing in various additives (i.e., retardants, hardeners, drying agents, and other additives). Knowledge of tools when mixing and testing paint for viscosity and thickness.
--Knowledge of coating materials so that surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips, orange peels, fish eyes, and brush strokes. Skill to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces; to brush on, roll on, and spray coating materials; and to apply other related methods and techniques.
--Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, etc. Ability to read paint schemes, and manufacturers specific instructions and guidelines.
--Skill in using tools and equipment such as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paintbrushes, rollers, and spray guns.
