Responsibilities

Serves as the Supervisory Legal Assistant in the Norfolk Division for the Criminal Sections and as the personal assistant to the Managing Assistant United States Attorney. Performs a full range of duties including but not limited to: preparing a wide range of legal documents, composing correspondence, receiving visitors and callers, maintaining files, running reports, searching legal references, and exercising substantial initiative and independence of action, based on an in-depth knowledge of legal processes; acting as the primary point of contact for general criminal case information; ensuring all necessary pleadings are prepared and filed in a timely fashion, and maintained in an orderly system; and exercising administrative supervision over legal assistants and other support personnel assigned to the Norfolk Division.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

GS-9 : To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must have: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing complex legal support work relating to the examination, preparation and processing of legal documents and materials; providing administrative supervision; giving advice, counsel or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.

GS-10 : To be eligible at the GS-10 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience preparing and reviewing complex legal documents and materials; knowledge of the operating and administrative functions of an office; supervising and assigning work in a legal and/or support staff environment; explaining work requirements, methods, procedures and policies to subordinates.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) - The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
