Summary

This position is located in the Voice of America's News Center. The incumbent is a Supervisory Editor (Hub) with responsibility for overseeing the editing and issuing of news content (audio, video, and text) for use on radio, television, and the internet. This individual is responsible for the quality and timeliness of all products issued during his/her shift, which may also include giving the final read to high priority or complex stories.

Responsibilities

As Supervisory Editor of the evening News Hub, the incumbent supervises the work of story editors, specialty editors, reporters, writers, producers and production specialists, etc. The incumbent oversees news writing and news gathering operations and editing of the Hub of the News Center and is responsible for the overall quality and timeliness of all products issued during his/her shift (audio, video and text) for use on radio, television, and the internet/social media. Responsibilities for this individual may also include signing off on final video edits of television packages or assigning this task to story or specialty editors if a member of the TV team is not available, and accepting pitches in absence of an overseas coverage editor.

The incumbent monitors news wires, social and other news outlets, assigns news stories as warranted and works closely with beat and coverage editors to ensure they are on top of developments.

The incumbent confers with the Director, Managing Editor, Assignment Editor, and TV Team throughout the day on coverage issues and decisions. Additionally, he/she is in constant contact with the Homepage Slot Editor and Social Slot Editor.

He/she works with other Shift Supervisors and oversees the writing, reporting, and editing staff to ensure all news products are accurate, authoritative, comprehensive, balanced, and that they conform to the VOA Charter and fulfill the needs of VOA language services and Web sites. Ensures consistency across all media and works with the production staff to ensure that audio and video are high quality and issued promptly.

Recommends and coordinates assignments and travel for correspondents, video journalists, and other content producers and is responsible for assuring that all queries from VOA language services concerning the news products are accurately and promptly addressed.

Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13), which is directly related to this line of work.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Listed below are specialized experiences, which MUST be addressed within the application, in order to be considered.

Specialized Experiences, Which Must be Addressed:
Experience overseeing news writing and news gathering operations and editing of stories.
Experience editing and issuing news content (audio, video, and text) for use on radio, television, and the internet.
Knowledge of international and national journalism laws, practices, and ethics.
Experience coordinating the activities of a professional staff working against deadlines to meet the programming needs of the broadcast service.
