Financial and Operational Services (FOS) manages AARP's multi-year financial planning, budgeting and forecasting; treasury and investments; tax reporting and planning; and accounting and financial reporting activities. The division provides project management and training and support for the systems used to manage AARP's money and assets.


Provides ongoing capital planning financial and business analysis and support for all levels of management within AARP, including the category owners responsible for managing AARP's capital requirements and spending. Performs financial analysis and reporting duties, including creation, review, and quality control of financial and operational reporting (system-generated and ad-hoc).
Coordinates the annual capital and depreciation budgets, including the multi-year financial plan, quarterly forecast updates, and monthly financial results analysis across multiple lines of business within AARP, ASI, and the Foundation. Develops, builds, and maintains complex financial models. Analyzes financial statements and related data. Develops executive-level presentations to inform and support both short-term and long-term planning efforts enterprise-wide. Supports the quarterly COO and Operating Committee Capital Plan review and approval (three forecast updates and one budget multi-year financial plan). Performs complex/advanced general ledger accounting and financial reporting and analysis duties, including creation, review, and quality control of financial statement reports. Monitors the chart of accounts structure and related financial reporting formats and leverages related data for capital project analysis and reporting. Processes transactions related to capital asset additions, transfers, and retirements, including creation of new asset records and other entries to the fixed asset module of the financial system. Reviews, reconciles, and performs account analysis on all related general ledger accounts on a monthly or quarterly basis, including capital asset, accumulated depreciation, capital-in-process, depreciation expense, and gain/loss on disposal.
Assists with review of capital asset requisitions, assessment of capital projects, coordinating with business unit clients, and ensures compliance with established policies and procedures.

  • Provides direct financial planning and analysis support (forecast, multi-year plans), as well as develops and maintains numerous spreadsheets and other data sources used in financial forecasting and project management.
  • Manages monthly business unit budget/forecast variance reports, reviews purchase orders, identifies and communicate details related to any variance issues, meets with business unit managers, discusses variances, and documents/communicates related risks or opportunities.
  • Develops complicated forms, reports, and ad hoc analytics within Hyperion Planning (Capital Cube), Hyperion Financial Reporting, and Smart View and is trained extensively on all aspects of Hyperion Planning and People Soft Asset Management.
  • Partners with business group leaders, operations staff, accounting, and other finance staff to coordinate the timely completion of the annual budget process, quarterly forecasts, multi-year plans, monthly financial close, and other ad-hoc analysis projects.
  • Provides financial modeling expertise, reporting, analytics, and ownership in the following key areas: financial modeling heavily based on Hyperion, PeopleSoft, and Oracle Business Intelligence data, project management, including variance reporting and updating the expense split for operating and capital, and monthly operational and financial variance analysis.
  • Manages and executes special projects, ad-hoc analysis, and other duties, as assigned.
  • Prioritizes projects and assignments efficiently and effectively, evaluates the analytical output of others, and completes assignments in a timely manner (often managing multiple projects with competing priorities).
  • Performs monthly, quarterly, and annual analyses and reconciliations of balance sheet and expense general ledger accounts, as assigned and maintains the completeness and accuracy of all related account balances in accordance with GAAP.Supports the monthly financial reporting for the business unit(s) supported and/or for AARP consolidated. Assists in the preparation of the annual external audit.


Completion of a Bachelor's degree Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline (advanced degree in Finance, MBA, and/or CPA highly preferred) and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.

Requires experience in financial planning, project planning, budgeting, capital budgeting, forecasting, business analysis, and modeling.

Excellent oral, written, influence, and interpersonal skills required.

Ability to manage multiple deadlines across diverse business groups.

Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships and work collaboratively with key business unit partners.

Ability to communicate financial directives and operating agreements, as well as financial position and direction.

Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively to various audiences.

Desire to constantly improve business processes to drive efficiency and improve forecast and project reporting accuracy.
