Requirements

The Cancer Prevention and Control Program is the nexus for population sciences-focused research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center . Its mission is to conduct innovative and impactful population sciences research across the translational continuum, from discovery to intervention to policy, to help alleviate the burden of cancer. A unique aspect of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program is its capacity to rapidly translate findings through the phases of this continuum within and across each of the Program's scientific aims.

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist works as part of the Lung Screening, Tobacco, and Health team, conducting the research project entitled 'Integrating Smoking Cessation within Lung Cancer Screening Programs' and is centrally involved in the development and implementation of the Smoking Treatment and Recovery clinical smoking cessation program at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. S/he conducts a telephone-based and in- person smoking cessation interventions, conducts participant assessments, and performs data management. Reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) and to the Project Director, the Tobacco Treatment Specialist has duties that include but are not limited to:

Interviews
  • Conducts telephone interviews with research participants undergoing lung cancer screening.
  • Conducts telephone counseling for smoking cessation with research participants undergoing lung cancer screening.
  • Conducts face-to-face and telephone-based smoking cessation counseling with individuals diagnosed with cancer.


Data Management
  • Conducts data management and data entry tasks for the STAR (Sihat Tanpa Rokok - Healthy Without Smoking) clinical program.
  • Mails materials to participants.


Cessation Protocols
  • Assists the PI in developing the smoking cessation protocol for Lombardi cancer patients.
  • Assists the PI and Co-Investigator in supervising less experienced staff in conducting the tobacco treatment protocol - for example, assists with the development of the assessment and treatment protocol for the STAR program, and supervises less experienced tobacco treatment specialists.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, public health, or another social science - Master's preferred
  • Successful completion of a training program for tobacco treatment specialists
  • 3 years of experience serving as tobacco treatment working on behavioral tobacco-related research or clinical projects
  • Preference for fluency in Spanish
