Requirements

Instructional Designer - Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS)

The Instructional Designer (ID) designs and develops blended and online courses, modules, and instructional materials. S/he understands project design and project requirements, serving as the day-to-day point of contact for stakeholders. In this work, the ID serves as project manager, leading a project team to ensure that course materials are appropriately integrated into the design and tested for quality assurance. Reporting directly to the Director of Learning Design and Research, and working closely with the other members of the CNDLS course development team, the Instructional Designer has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Consultation
  • Consults with Faculty/Subject Matter Experts to support their design and development of courses and course modules.
  • Assists Faculty/Subject Matter Experts to identify and develop effective learning goals and align course activities with these goals.
  • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert for the selection and integration of instructional approaches and instructional technologies.


Project Management
  • Establishes project timelines, clearly defining project deliverables and implementation milestones.
  • Plans and schedules design resources.
  • Manages the day-to-day course team activities and stakeholder communications.


Content Delivery
  • Develops online materials such as course development guides and other training materials which faculty adopt into their own course materials as appropriate and/or are used for faculty development activities.


Instructional Development and Research
  • In collaboration with other CNDLS staff, offers faculty development workshops and participates in other faculty development initiatives as needed.
  • Conducts research related to learning design and online course development, which leads to conference presentations and paper publications.
  • Performs a peer review of departmental projects to ensure all CNDLS projects follow industry-established best practices.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree; Master's degree in Instructional Design or related field preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in instruction and educational technology with demonstrated knowledge of face-to-face, blended, and online course learning design and development
  • Experience in designing, developing, assessing, and supporting online course design
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning theory, instructional design, and teaching methods applicable to a variety of disciplines, particular to instructional design/technology
  • Experience with a variety of online tools as well as a working understanding of HTML/CSS
  • Experience with web-based courseware such as Blackboard, Canvas, and Echo360
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community
  • Familiarity with formative and summative assessment designs and instruments
  • A team player who is able to manage multiple competing priorities and complete projects according to schedule
